Definitions

Blocking: An illegal move to protect track position.

Blue Flag: An iRacing-generated flag indicating that a car is within 1.5 seconds of lapping the car receiving the flag.

Brake Checking: Intentionally and suddenly applying the brakes to provoke a reaction from the driver behind.

Braking Zone: Where a driver begins to brake to enter a corner.

Breaking the Tow/Draft, aka Weaving: A movement by the leading car away from the line of the chasing car to prevent the chasing car from gaining a tow/draft.

Chopping: Pulling in front of a car abruptly after a pass to deprive them of adequate time or space to react.

Clear: A car is considered clear when there is no overlap.

Defending: A legal move to protect track position.

Dive Bomb: Failing to establish passing position by the overtaking driver before the normal turn-in point, when doing so denies a car or cars the use of the full width of the track throughout the corner.

Drive-Thru Penalty: An in-race penalty where the driver must drive through the pit lane at no more than the pit lane speed. The driver must not drive through the pit box section or their pit box, as this will not clear the penalty.

Drop Race: A driver’s lowest-scoring race or a race they did not attend.

Dumbutz: Drivers who don’t read the CRG, but complain about it.

Establishing Position: A car is considered to have an established position when the center of the front axle of the trailing car is aligned or ahead of the center of the rear axle of the leading car.

Finish: The moment an individual car passes the finish line and receives the checkered flag.

Finish Line: The line that marks the end point of the race on the last lap, typically marked by iRacing’s “Barney the Flag Man” with a checkered flag.

Forced Off Track: Occurs when a driver is caused by another driver to put two or more wheels off the track surface.

Incident (PCA Sim Racing): Occurs when a driver is responsible for having contact, causing another car(s) to:

  • Spin or be turned.
  • Have damage resulting in a “meatball flag”.
  • Contact includes netcode contact unless RC judges that visible separation and car trajectories indicate contact would not have occurred.

Incident (iRacing): An incident point issued by iRacing. A series or special event page will specify at what number of “Xs” a driver or team receives a penalty or is disqualified.

Incident Review Request (IRR): A post-race process to request a review of an incident or breach of rules that occurred during a race, which was either not penalized by RC or disputed by a party. For series or special events that RC officiates, drivers may request an IRR.

IRR Team: A group of drivers that reviews incidents.

Jump Start: A start maneuver that leads to approaching the start line at a significantly higher speed than the pace car, typically by allowing a gap to form with the car ahead and then guessing when the green flag drops.

Lane (for Start Procedure): A lane is defined by the outer edges of the rear tires of the leading car. The lane for the following car is formed by the car directly in front.

License Penalty Point (LPP): A penalty charged to a driver’s Penalty License in conjunction with a penalizable offense assigned by RC or the IRR Team that is in addition to any in-race penalties.

Loss of Control: A situation where the car no longer responds to the driver’s controls as expected.

Missed Start: Occurs when a driver is not on the grid at the time the grid countdown timer expires.

Official Replay: The replay which must be used to determine any incidents and time at which they occurred for the purpose of filing post-race incident reviews (IRRs).

Orange Zone: The Orange Zone is a period of enhanced penalties. For each driver it is in effect from the moment the first car starts moving until the completion of the driver’s first race lap.

Overlap: An overlap exists when two cars are side by side to any extent such that if either car moves toward the other, contact would occur.

Penalty: A punishment issued either during the race or post-race. Penalties can include a drive-thru, a stop-and-hold, time added to the total race time, or disqualification.

Race Control (RC): The team that evaluates incidents as they occur, determines which driver, if any, is at fault, and issues an appropriate in-race or post-race penalty if justified.

Racing Incident: An incident (see Incident – PCA Sim Racing) where only the driver at fault is impacted, or both drivers are deemed equally responsible. Not all contacts will result in a penalty.

Racing Room: Space allotted for another driver, consisting of one car width plus the width of a tire from the edge of the track.

Safe Pass: A pass where no contact takes place and no car involved in the pass spins or leaves the racing surface because all parties maintained racing room at all times.

Start Line: The line that signifies the starting point of the race, typically marked by iRacing’s “Barney the Flag Man” or green lights located overhead or beside the track. The starting line may differ from the finishing line.

Stop-and-Hold Penalty: An in-race penalty that requires the driver to stop in their pit box and remain stationary for the duration of the penalty. The penalty must be served without taking any services. Should the driver choose to add any services (fuel, tires, windshield tear-off, fast repair, etc.), additional time will be automatically added to the total hold time—typically at least 25 seconds.

Standing: A driver is considered to have standing when an action by another driver results in contact or causes them to lose position, or they observe egregious behavior or cheating.

Straight: Any section of the track between two corners that is either straight or features only slight curves that can be taken “flat out” by two cars positioned alongside each other.

Team affiliation: being a member of a team that includes another PCA Sim Racing member, irrespective if that team races within PCA Sim Racing, or in other leagues or official iRacing events.

Track (Surface): The paved surface, typically marked by white lines. Curbs and designated hardened surfaces may also be considered part of the track. Any section that triggers an off-track “1x” penalty from iRacing is not considered part of the track.

Turn-in Point: Where a driver begins to turn the steering wheel to enter a corner.

Unsafe Rejoin: Rejoining the track in a manner that causes another car(s) to take evasive action, go off track, lose position, or cause an incident.

“X”: An incident point issued by iRacing. A series or special event page will specify at what number of “Xs” a driver or team receives a penalty or is disqualified.

Yellow Flag (Single): An iRacing-issued flag indicating a local hazard on the track ahead.
